(14,559 posts)The subtlety for tonality is the key to it's attraction.
As part of my MS degree I did a study of mono chromatic images vs multi chromatic images. My conclusion was that while a full color range conveyed more detailed information, i.e. viewers could recall more details of the image, monochromatic images elicited more emotional responses. It was a very small sample and nothing statistically significant was possible it was at least anecdotally interesting.
The one that go to me was a college freshman who looked at a sepia of toast and butter, not the most dramatic image, and cried because it reminded her that she was away from home where Mom made breakfast every morning.
Less can be a lot more.
Oh, and coming from the king of B&W that's high praise.
