Some of us were already grown up by then and all this stuff was just normal. The clothes were pretty hideous, though.

It absolutely did not translate to off the rack and ready to wear. I saw a documentary an Halston a few months back and his designs were gorgeous.
I was still growing up during the 70s, and my tortuous experiences with plaid bell bottoms, midi and maxi dresses, fringed vests, accordion sleeves, and the like bear this out.
