Morning Glory 4 ways.

I shot this flower 4 ways: Direct sunlight, Direct sunlight with heavy RAW editing, using a scrim and using diffused flash to over-ride sunlight.

This is the scrim. It's a translucent material on a frame that softens the light but still maintains a directional quality.

I also used a diffused flash for this experiment.

Here's the bloom au natural, direct sun. Pretty harsh light and very contrasty.

This is edited RAW. I'm not really good at RAW but it's an improvement.

The scrim.

And finally the flash.

Apologies for the difference in white balance. I like the scrim but it's difficult to handle in the wind and to use one for portraiture it has to be BIG, like 5 feet on a side. On the other hand it's pretty low tech, you can use it with a cellphone or point n shoot and it maintains a natural direction to the lighting.

1. Good little tutorial

The difference between the scrim and flash are pretty negligible.
Many of my floral shots are with flash with diffuser. Not only does it soften the contrast, it will freeze any motion caused by breezes.

2. The on camera flash is a little more 'flat' than the scrim.

The scrim allows for a more directional light. The biggest difference is the highlight on the left side of the boom that's missing in the flash.

I'm hoping some of our cell phone users will be inspired to take a bit more control over the creative experience.

3. The one with the scrim seemed richer.

4. What I like about the scrim is that the shadow that is in the original

full sun picture is still there. That gives a highlight to the right side of the bloom.

I'm thinking of buying one of these:

Wish I could find one half this size.

5. I like those too. You can get smaller ones too.

I have a ring light I can detach and use as a bounce or fill. I donít use the flash, only the light.
