effective focal length 1800mm

no sepia treatment, just a little underexposed in camera (intentionally)

... with a 500mm lens. It was also intentionally underexposed, but it looked like a black-and-white photo until I used the sepia filter on it:

My own attempt. Think I like your moon better. Better cropping and better color.

That's the equivalent of 840mm ff. I also use the camera body's digital 2x (crops to 5 meg and resizes in camera to 20 meg) which gives me 1680mm equivalent.

To be honest it's not the equipment (well, maybe a little) it's the seeing conditions. I'm 30 miles north of Fort Worth which is far enough out to lose some of the light pollution and the air was cool (60's) and still.

... and the air wasn't very still when I took my photo -- the shimmering made it hard to focus. But I just recently learned that I'm only about an hour away from some Class 1 sky, so I'm waiting for a good night to have a go at Orion, Andromeda, and the Pleiadies. I've tried from here, and while I'm very surprised and impressed with what can be done with stacking, I'm sure clear skies will be awesome.

photography and what it takes to make some awesome images. Orion is spectacular and as large as the moon but Andromeda is kinda far and faint.

There's nothing quite so inspiring as peering into the depths of the cosmos and feeling part of it.

We are star stuff . . .

That's what inspired me. I know he's using both a star tracker and image stacking. I'm thinking about getting one of these mechanical trackers: Omegon MiniTrack LX2. It's gotten very good reviews on YouTube.

There's not a lot of moon shots I like, but this one is well done. Has nothing to do with the sharpness of the image, it's the overall tone that appeals to me.

Good work!

Love the color and the way the craters show how the moon curves.

Just gorgeous.
