They're pretty common but you don't see them very often.

(112,900 posts)19. This one was a northern spiny softshell, which I found in Lake Pepin,
a wide spot in the Mississippi River between Minnesota and Wisconsin. They are not endangered, but its relative, the smooth softshell (Apalone mutica) is of "special concern" in the area, though it's not on the federal endangered species list.
