Well, I have a very good close-up lens, so I attached a flash, aimed at the rose with the sky as background and messed around with the picture in post processing.

May I ask what camera equipment you own?

If by "high key" you mean increasing saturation I did. I use an application with a setting for bringing out resolution, highlights, etc. It still amazes me how much can be done with digital photography. I don't know if there are any Zinnias around here, otherwise I'd try your suggestion.

I'd not known about this. Makes sense. I have a sense for lighting, but never really understood how it works.

I took a look at your Flickr page. Many very good photographs. Do you shoot Olympus Micro Four Thirds?

I went through a dark phase, and now I seem to be going in the other direction.
I use free software for editing: GIMP and the Photos app in MacOS.
