4. Fort Worth hosts a great many national breed competition shows, including Paint Horse

When we were poorer, my daughter and her best friend were total horse junkies. I discovered we could visit the shows without admission fees, roam the barns, pet the horses and the owners' dogs and best of all talk to the folks hanging out in the barns.

We watched the horses being groomed for their show competitions and portraits, (the girls loved the shower stalls) and just generally had fun. Those horses loved to pose for the portraits!

The best part was the exhibition shows with the costumes!

The only parts we could not attend without a paid ticket were the final competition events, but by the time they started we were pretty tired of the heat.

One of the favorites was the Paint Horse Show, which they loved because the owners really talked to them about their animals, and horses were very friendly
