Related: About this forumAny suggestions for a reasonably priced water proof digital camera?
My family is going to attend Jean-Michel Cousteau's family camp on Catalina island. Snorkeling will be a highlight of course.
A local dive shop has one for $300, but that is a bit pricey for a camera that I will use only every couple of years.

(3,158 posts)Back in my surf fishing days I used inexpensive point n' shoot cameras from Olympus and Fuji. I still occasionally use them for kayaking.

Which fits a Nikon J1 with a 10-30 (30-90mm equiv) lens which sell used in the 100-200 dollar range and is a super pocket sized camera. All in around $300 (+/_) yet you get a high performance dive camera system and a compact digital...

(99 posts)Instead of a waterproof camera, look at REI or some other outdoor store for a bag that has clear plastic and makes a waterproof seal. Especially good for point and shoot digital cameras.

(10,778 posts)... that's not so expensive, the two that I would recommend are the Hawkeye Firefly 8S (or 8SE), about $110 to $140 (depending on model and lens), and the Xiaomi Seabird, which is around $100. They both have 12MP Sony sensors and produce pretty good photos and smooth 4K video. There are literally dozens of cheaper 4K action cameras, but buyer beware -- check out YouTube reviews for anything that looks tempting. Some are fake 4K (interpolated); some are not smooth because of dropped frames and/or low frame rates; some just have bad image quality; and the very cheapest ones are all of the above.
