Two from the window

Not a great shot--not even a good shot--but one of those moment in time shots that gives you a thrill.

The first hummingbird showed up May 1st at my feeder at this new house in a new development that still has construction going on all around. I hung the feeder in mid-April and hoped I might get one or two hummers this year.

I have hummers all day long now. Hummer wars on a daily basis. Usually when a second hummer comes in while one is feeding, there is an air battle. Star wars stuff. This morning I looked out the window and two were both feeding. For once, the camera was within arm's length and I managed to get two shots before one flew away. This is the best one!

What food do you put on it? I have the usual hummingburd feeder with liquid, but haven't seen many lately. I live in So. California and can't understand where they've gone.

Boil water and add 1/4 c granulated sugar to 1 c boiled water. Let it cool. I refill the feeder every couple of days.

I read that the red dye added to most commercial hummingbird nectar is harmful for them, so I learned how to make my own. I also change the food every couple of days, especially when temperatures are high because mold can develop very quickly.

I love your photo. The hummingbirds at my feeders bring me so much joy.

One on the hanging petunias, not the feeders. I have a huge flower garden, so where are they?

Where are you?

This is a shot of my garden. Lots of red in my potted plants. The feeder is installed next to climbing roses, which are mostly putting out cane growth this first year and few flowers. I have seen the Hummers fly in to hide in the climbing roses.

I always have tons of them but this year I had a couple then none. I took the feeders down, there has been plenty of rain and no shortage of wild flowers around the pastures. Orioles were scarce this year too but the Ospreys stayed around longer than usual, the Bald Eagles were plentiful before nesting. Still, most songbirds are a bit on the low side this year for me.

You're right about the "moment in time" — you caught it! Glad your camera was close by!!

And Holy Cow, I just saw the shadow in flight! Neat!
