Survivor One World - Episode One (spoilers about this episode only)

Last edited Thu Feb 16, 2012, 04:43 PM - Edit history (1)

Fun! As predicted, two camps in one. Major paranoia. Some real asshats.

Forgive me for being useless on names, I only remember a couple.

Colton is dooooomed unless he figures out how to play the game, which means playing everybody. Tell the men he's a spy in the women's camp. Tell the women he's a double agent. Then set himself up with whichever side gains dominance. Do the same thing withing the men's tribe. If it's true that the men's tribe is split 4-4-1 as he said (it appears that way), sell your vote and save the HII for when you really need it.

The women seem fractured, but the (very!) early five-lady alliance is probably still there. I wasn't sure, though, as I'd have to back and see, but I thought some of the ladies in that supposed alliance were talking about a different set of five. I'll be watching again this weekend to try and pin that down.

The four jocks seem to have math issues, as a 4 person alliance isn't dominant in a 9 person tribe unless the other five are hopelessly confused. That could be the case, we don't know enough yet to tell.

On the other tribe, the teacher who kept complaining about the "shady deal" with the palm fronds and fire seems like one of those dedicated to "keeping it real" and "just being me" who ruin reality TV for me. Ugh. Was glad the negotiator of the deal stood her ground at TC.

The challenge looked interesting. In the end, I think the men made the right decision. In a game, never turn down the opportunity to win. You never know when something weird will happen.

I thought a better option would have been to give the men the opportunity to pick someone to proceed to the end of the challenge, so it could proceed 8-8.

The HII was found way too easily. Shades of the bad Russhole days. She had two basic options: 1. give it to Colton to mess with the men's tribe, given that he's the obvious first target there, or 2. give it to the one of the ones more likely to survive to the merge as a means of currying favour. I go back and forth on that one. If Colton plays things properly, giving it to him is the best option, I guess.

Finally, I was pleasantly surprised that TPTB didn't make a big deal about Leif's being a little person. There was no self-congratulory commentary about how this is the first little person ever on the show or anything, they just treated him the way he should be treated, like any other survivor. Woot.

I liked the little twist of the HII only being allowed by a given side, it will be interesting to see who find the other one.

HA! The men stealing crap right off the bat had me rolling, I thought that was wicked funny. The women getting back by keeping the chickens seemed like it would be good to get some back in trade but their lack of fire making ability killed it... The fire stealing scenes were both also wicked funny.

The challenge looked good to start but the men had it well in hand. I think they made a mistake by not finishing as the women posed no threat anyway in that one.

oh... Don't forget to put a 'spoiler alert' in the title

I forgot the in the nuDU these things get out in general. For several seasons either I or dr strangelove have posted weekly episode threads, and we just assumed everyone knew that they were about the episode that just aired.

But I'll edit.

in an interview that Jeff P did. He said Colton was a villain, but he was one of those types who didn't realize they were a villain.

Of course Jeff has always favored the strongest male. It's getting ridiculous how he is no longer a bystander at challenges or at tribal. He seems to try to steer things for one of his favorites.

we wish he would just shut the hell up! Sometimes it's at tribal. Other times he can be SO annoying during the challenges.

I know the shows are edited and maybe I'm just being picky, but it seemed to me that the women hardly even tried to make fire on their own. It was great that they got the embers from the men's fire. That should have put them on a more even footing. I would have loved to see the men's reaction to hearing that the women had fire and how they got it. To let it go out and then keep begging for the men to make it for them just seemed weak to me. They were shown trying to start a fire, but it looked like a pretty wimpy attempt. Maybe they really tried harder/longer than was shown.

I hope they get it together as a tribe, as Jeff said at TC, they are really all over the place. Kind of embarrassing imo, speaking as a woman.

Laz, Thank you for posting this. I was away all week and finally got to watch it. I have to say, I liked the start. I am SOOOO glad that redemption went the way of the Dodo. I disliked redemption. Also glad its eighteen new castaways and no retreads.

I like the return to the truck filled with gear. I also love that Michael stole the ax. When I saw the ax come down, I thought that the ax was the best thing on the truck. Game On!!! I give props to Leif for immediately letting everyone know that he makes up for his size with strength and durability. Great mover, and he backed it up.

I think the women poorly played the chicken issue. Chelsea could have claimed ownership and said, I didn't agree to anything, you want one, give me back the ax you took, otherwise, happy hunting. They should have gone right over to camp and started work. Instead they showed right away that they are broken up and not playing as a unit. Its going to crush them if they keep showing their hands like that in public. Its a different game without a "safe" home camp to return to.

I like that the idol has to be given away right away. Its a good move. I think colton was the best choice since it will create havoc in the tribes. Colton is in a good spot if he plays the game right. Those 4 strong guys will start to get annoyed with each other quickly.

I have to give the Challenge team props for a great opening challenge. It was physical, yet also required dexterity. Who knows if the guys all would have made it across. While I felt badly for Kourtney (partly because she was the girl I was most attracted to and selfishly enjoyed her good looks) getting hurt, she just ignored the instructions. Jeff made it clear not to go arm first. She is lucky it was not far worse.

The men made the right call in winning the challenge. It's a game and you take every advantage that you can. Tribal was as I expected, a tribe without a true leader or a leading alliance. That will change, but not for a week or two more. So long Kourtney.

Good start.
