HBO's 'The Lady and the Dale' a compelling crime yarn w/LA reporter Dick Carlson (Tucker's dad)

HBO’s ‘The Lady and the Dale’ is a weirdly compelling crime yarn. But there’s an interesting thread w Dick Carlson, an LA TV reporter who covered the case. It goes unmentioned, but he’s Tucker’s dad—with a mean, mocking streak. Figures

Very compelling television. I was a pre-teen when that story unfolded so I had never heard of Elizabeth and her con, so the story kept me riveted.

I have some memory of that three-wheeled car, but that's about it. My dad sold cars for a hot minute in the 70s, so he would have paid attention to it.

they were this close to hooking those Japanese businessmen (the story about the infamous test drive was hysterical). Had they pulled that off the cash would have flowed in and the con might have rolled on a while longer.

I'm like most folks and I like to think I can spot a con far away, but, I can see why all of those "average" folks fell for it. Hell, if I'd heard one of her speeches I might have plunked down a deposit, too.
