Dude makes obviously bad decision after obviously bad decision. The only guy in the Zombie Apocalypse not getting smarter with experience.

Sure, he makes some bad decisions but if the leader of the zombie apocalypse always made the correct decisions it wouldn't provide a lot of plot tensions, now would it. Additionally, he is there as the main catalyst to explore the impact on humanity.

That said, I think he is a bigger badass in the books and is much more intelligent as far as strategy. Though, in the books, either he or Carl needs to die (or they need to be split up).

Kirkland has made it clear that the books and the show operate in completely different universes (as evidenced by many characters that are not in both, that characters in the show are long dead in the books, etc)
