(Possible spoiler)Anyone else underwhelmed by Boardwalk Empire's finale?

Although I had guessed early on that they would end it this way, I was still disappointed by the way they did it.

They should have just ended it at the end of last season, and called it a day.. They wasted a lot of time "tying up loose ends" that most of us avid watchers had already figured out.

Margaret ended up the "winner", since she was still married to Nucky and probably was smart enough to cash in her winnings... Eli came in 2nd, since he has a new stake to start over.. everyone else lost..

This entire season was a huge downer. I did enjoy the flashbacks to their younger days, though.

Nucky really had lost everything and everybody, he was at the end of his era.
The episode showed his ghosts and demons, but there a bit in the show that implied he would be the victim of a mob hit.
The writer threw that out as a false flag.
Kinda fitting who it was that took him out, I thought.

I knew he would die at the end, when I saw the opening scene of him swimming way out in the ocean.

I had to stretch my memory a little to account for the actions of some characters in prior seasons, by I figured that's how it would be. Good show, I'll miss it.

I commented about halfway through that it was moving at a snail's pace. The previous episode was better than this one by far.

But, it was an "appropriate" ending...

At least they didn't go to black screen, leaving one to wonder what happened. (sorry, Sopranos, but that ending still bugs me)

Since it was acknowledged early-on, I was a bit surprised that they killed him. A more appropriate ending (to me) would have been them moving to NYC, where he would have retired... This show had plenty of killing, for years, so one less killing would not have bothered me at all

I kind of like the last episode.

That being said, I kind of thought the whole season was trying a little too hard to be Godfather II.

That being said, I think it was necessary so we understood who Gillian was before the Commodore. And that Nucky could have saved her but instead decided to advance himself. To "swim out so far you can't come back again." I hated Nucky so much when he was grabbing young Gillian's hand and telling her it would be OK. I don't know if I would have had that reaction without the slow burn of that season. Young Gillian was an awesome person. Who knows what she would have grown up to be if she hadn't have been pimped out to the Commodore.

I liked that they closed all the lose ends. I was afraid it was going to be like Dexter.
