Edit to add (from 6/29/15): Red Light Cameras may be on the ballot in November!
Tucson voters may decide red-light camera ban
"It's predatory enforcement," said Mark Spear of Tucson Traffic Justice. "What I mean by that is that it enforces so harshly that it essentially nails people who really have no intent, they have no real danger of causing a collision or an accident."
Voters should know in less than a month if we'll get the chance to vote on whether or not to keep photo traffic enforcement in Tucson. Pima County did away with its speed enforcement cameras last year.

_________________________ from 5/23/15:
I had jury service downtown last Wednesday. I ended up driving on streets I hadn't driven on in years, at a time of day (morning rush hour) that I'm never out driving around. (day sleeper here) New road signs and turn signals that I was unfamiliar with... I thought I may have been caught turning left too late, after the yellow ended. IOW, running a red light.
Anyway, I saw this police car parked Thursday night and decided to see if I could ask him how much time is allowed before they send you a ticket. I thought there was a 1 or 2 second delay.
There's only about 1/10 of a second, or around there... But that's not the 'good' info he gave me.

This is it:
If you get a notice in the mail, DON'T DO ANYTHING.
1. Do NOT go to the website and enter the code on the card they sent you. They tell you that you can watch the traffic camera video/photo to view your own violation.
2. Do NOT answer the door if you don't know the person. They need to serve you with the warrant/citation.
If you have entered the code on the card, that is proof that you recvd the notice and you're out of luck. If they serve you, you're out of luck.
He said that it's either 30 or 60 days (he wasn't sure which) and then the warrant/citation/ticket, is DISMISSED. It's just gone. They forget about it. I would go with 60 days to be safe.
ALSO, if someone else was driving your car and they see the person doesn't match your drivers license photo, they may ask you who it was that was driving your car. You do NOT have to tell them. He said to say, "I'm not required by law to give you that information."

So I hope I don't get a card in the mail, but if I do - I know how I'm going to 'NOT' respond!
Please Note: This is only for red light camera tickets
This guy was so nice. He was like the cops of years ago. Friendly, no attitude, not all suited up. I wish I'd gotten his name. He doesn't like the red light cameras. They're not fair. If you're a snowbird, you're excluded. If you're visiting/shopping here from Mexico, you're excluded. If you're a student from out of state, you're excluded. Only drivers with AZ plates get the notices.
So, I thought I would pass the info along. It may be useful one day.
Have a great long Memorial Day weekend, and be safe.

(23,156 posts)At least in Tucson?
Really?
I live in a different state, but several years ago I was rear-ended, and the person driving the car that rear-ended me was not the owner. So the owner tried to say his car wasn't involved. Luckily, the police report indicated that it was his car, and the friend he'd lent it to showed up s the driver. Eventually the insurance company figured it all out and I got my deductible back.
So if you really are at fault, please don't try to fuck over someone else by evading your responsibility.

(9,273 posts)I thought it was clear that I was speaking about the red light cameras in Tucson. Theyve been pretty controversial here. They send notices in the mail, when a photo is taken of your car running a red light.
Red light cameras watching you in City of Tucson
No accidents, collisions, hit and runs, etc. This is only for the 30 intersections in Tucson that have the
red light cameras. It makes a lot of money for the city. If a cop pulls you over for running a red light or speeding, thats one thing. But the red light camera is a different animal.
Im sorry for your experience being rear-ended, and Im glad it all worked out in the end.

(23,156 posts)speeding cameras in various locations, which changed daily. People who got tickets from them simply could not contest them. There were lots of protests about that, and an issue with the company that ran them (that may well have been an Arizona company) and how much money they got compared to the trivial amount the city got, and so the contract wasn't renewed.
I have not noticed cars here speeding any more than they used to.

(9,273 posts)...but fortunately for me, I never received a ticket/notice in the mail. YEAH!!! So happy.
It's been 24 years since I got a ticket... and I hope that my luck continues.
