Oro Valley couple accused of child abuse, drug possession

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

An Oro Valley couple has been accused of child abuse after their 4-month-old was found to have cocaine in its system, authorities said.

The Oro Valley Police Department said the child's parents, Somchai P. Lisaius, a former reporter at Tucson News Now, and Krystin Rae Lisaius, a former reporter at KGUN 9, were indicted June 9.

Both appeared in court Monday, pleaded not guilty and were released on their own recognizance.

The child is in custody of the Arizona Department of Child Safety but is staying with the baby's maternal grandmother. Krystin Lisaius has been granted 24-7 contact with the child while Somchai is allowed to see the child 12 hours per day.

According to an Oro Valley police report, the couple admitted to snorting cocaine at a party at their home on May 14. Krystin Lisaius admitted to breastfeeding the child 12 hours after the drug use.

The police report indicated that police found "baggies with white powder or white residue," less than 2 grams, and other paraphernalia.

Looks, weath, good jobs, great teeth...everything but smarts.

I don't advocate doing drugs and then transmitting to your child, but if, as they suggest, this was a "one off" and they did the drugs at a party, you'd think that the mom would avoid transmitting the drugs to the child.

If it was a more common experience, you'd think that the mother would wait until the drugs clear her system, and then stockpile some breast milk for the odd "party night."

Or hell, just switch the kid to formula. I know some advocate the mother's milk, but there are times when it's just not the intelligent choice. This is one of them.
