Looking for hotel recommendations in Northern AZ

Hi all,

I'm planning a trip to Petrified forest, Canyon de Chelly, Arches, Monument Valley, and Horseshoe Bend - anyone have any hotel recommendations?

But we stayed at a motel (could have been a Holiday Inn?) near the University of Arizona in Flagstaff and the trains kept us up all night. Don't stay there!

I can remember the guy at the desk telling us that we "should have known" that because Flagstaff is a railroad town! Like we would know that.

We probably won't be staying there since it is still a bit close to Phoenix for where we want to go. But thanks for the tip.

Unfortunately we're planning on taking the more scenic route up 87 and 260 to 40 rather than 17 to 40.

I used to live in Flagstaff and stayed at the Hampton Inn there a couple of times. Nice staff and close to the places you want to see.

We've stayed at La Quinta which is right up the road from the Hampton Inn. This time we're only going to be passing through Flag on the way home (heading up 87 to 260) since we aren't planning on spending any time at the Canyon.

I'll check out Kayenta - looks like its right on our path.

but my spouse isn't a camper and we don't have any gear (well, I have an ANCIENT tent which hasn't been opened in 25 years but I don't think that's going to help us

This time we're staying away from I17 and the Canyon and targeting the northeastern part of the state, instead.

That's totally the type of place I like to stay. I'm trying to figure out how to add it to our plan as its about 2 hours out of the way of the original route.

or the Wigwam LOL http://sleepinawigwam.com/

There are really only a couple choices for Canyon de Chelly, unless you want to drive a long way.

and you are the second to recommend it. Unfortunately we weren't planning to go through Winslow.

I love the Wigwam - I'm pretty sure I'd seen the one in San Bernardino when I lived in Riverside. I'm also pretty sure my spouse will reject it

Right now the plan is not to spend the night at Canyon de Chelly for the very reason you mention. Leave where we are the night before early, get to the Canyon and spend a few hours there, head to the next hotel.

I think I've seen postcards of it but I'm pretty sure it was gone by the time I got here. I lived in Mesa for the first year and was working on campus so I'm pretty sure I would have noticed (the parking structure I parked in was on Rural - probably what replaced the hotel!). I think a postcard of it is part of one of the art installations at one of the light rail stops. That postcard may be what I'm remembering rather than the one in San Bernardino. I do remember the big to-do over the bank roof when they took it out to put in the dorms there. Don't know where on campus it ended up, either. I remember I did like the bank - very retro and kinda cool - and was sad to see it come down (but not enough to make a fuss).
