Arizona-grown Romaine lettuce outbreak now at 149 people sick in 29 states

NEW YORK — Four more states are reporting illnesses in a food poisoning outbreak linked to romaine lettuce.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its numbers on the outbreak Wednesday, revealing that 149 people in 29 states had gotten sick.

It's unclear if new illness are still occurring. There's a lag in reporting, and the most recent illness began two weeks ago.

Florida, Minnesota, North Dakota and Texas have joined the list of states reporting at least one E. coli illness linked to the outbreak.

a good idea. I even wash eggs thoroughly before cracking them, because growing up in India we had hens at home for eggs, and I have seen how outside of egg can get in contact with hen feces.

Washing romaine lettuce is not enough if water to irrigate was contaminated...ecoli is in the lettuce..

instead we get spinach and cook it in an omelet. But I still wash anything touched by agricultural workers, including bananas.

affected lettuce doesn't make it safe and to throw out, or return to the store, any suspicious produce.

But next time any lettuce is purchased, how to know it has e-coli inside the lettuce? We seldom buy raw lettuce, instead we cook spinach with eggs..

been in the upper 90's and higher for at least a week, any lettuce still in the ground would have bolted, any from Yuma in peoples' fridges has probably rotted by now
