Scottsdale police declare unlawful assembly

Protesters descended on downtown Phoenix and the Arizona state Capitol on Saturday for the third night in a row to decry the recent deaths of black men at the hands of law enforcement.

The 5 p.m. protest started with demonstrators gathering outside Phoenix City Hall before marching to the Arizona state Capitol and back. The official protest ended shortly after 7 p.m., but demonstrators lingered in the streets of downtown Phoenix for hours. Most demonstrated peacefully, but others repeatedly clashed with police

In Scottsdale, dozens were seen looting and vandalizing stores throughout Scottsdale Fashion Square late into the night.

Protests continued nationwide on Saturday, days after former Minneapolis police Officer Derek Chauvin was arrested days after video circulated of him holding his knee to George Floyd's neck for more than eight minutes before Floyd died.

This was NOT protesting. I am so angry because the neighborhoods to the south of the mall have homes owned by people of color. Homes were English is not the primary language. I know because I have lived here 62 years and volunteer at a food bank one mile from the mall. Over a decade ago this was declared a slum area so that South Scottsdale could get funds to clean up the neighborhood. I am now off to see the damage with my own eyes. Yes, this mall is one that I could never afford to shop at with the exception of the Hallmark store to get a card or Christmas ornament. Stepping off my soap box.

Edited to add: I am home. Two television crews are interviewing owners of smaller shops across the street from the mall. There is a bright side to this story. Two carpenters came with their trucks and tools. They brought wood to help cover the doors and broken windows. A Fed-Ex, a Chipotle, a Sprinkles Cupcake and a Bridal shop all had their windows and doors smashed.
