On this Day in AR History: December 15
On this day in 1932. Governor Harvey Parnell signed a certificate announcing the appointment of Hattie Caraway.
She was the first woman elected to serve a full term as United States Senator. Caraway represented Arkansas and supported Franklin D. Roosevelt's economic recovery plans during the Great Depression.
Caraway grew up in Tennessee but moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas after marrying Thaddeus Horatius Caraway of Clay County.
Her husband was a lawyer and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1912. He represented Arkansas in the House until 1921. He was elected to the Senate in 1920 and served until his death in 1931
