Behold the insane earthquake bed that swallows you up during a quake

http://www.sfgate.com/weird/article/Behold-the-absolutely-insane-earthquake-bed-6705122.php

If you're afraid of being prone in bed when the Big One hits, prepare to get even more anxious.

Chinese inventor Wang Wenxi patented an earthquake bed that "encases residents" when the earth starts shaking. Some call it a safety measure. Others would call it a Final Destination death scenario.

When a quake hits, the bed drops your sleeping self into a stainless-steel box. Like really drops you. If you've got arms or legs hanging off the bed, those are gonna get chopped off by the closing metal doors. Collateral damage.

Once you've been locked into your metal crypt, you'll find water, food and a gas mask. The gas mask is presumably for a World War I mustard gas attack, because if there's a gas leak and fire, you are going to get rotisserie-cooked in your "safety" bunker.

Those of us near the shore need to worry about tsunamis.

It's also totally not practical. Why use the encasement? - instead, just design it to let your mattress drop and those sides in the diagram will hold up whatever is collapsing around you, creating a greater air pocket to survive in .
I'd maybe change the design to just add horizontal bars across the middle and ends at the top of the headboard, sort of like a canopy bed design, to ensure you won't get hit by any large pieces if the cement floors above you pancake on you, as they did in the Mexico City quake.

Either the encasement structure for the bed is going to be sensitive enough to be triggered by a passing truck, train, or low-flying aircraft, or it will trap you in a shaker that isn't at the level to collapse your house, or for goodness sakes, if there's a fire - you can't get out. With just the sides, and maybe the dropping mattress, you will be able to get out in case the earthquake triggered a fire (see the latest Nepal Quake) because you wouldn't be trapped in a metal crypt like a roast in a pressure cooker.

There are just so many ways this appears to be a fail other than making your body hard or impossible to find by rescue workers and their dogs... who function using smell as well as sound, which is probably encased with you as well.

Ya know what I mean, I mean, you know what I mean?
