San Francisco man fights eviction after rent increase from $1,800 per month to $8,000

http://abc7news.com/realestate/san-francisco-man-fights-eviction-after-400-percent-rent-increase/1400818/

A San Francisco man is fighting to stay in his apartment, after his landlord suddenly hiked his rent from $1,800 a month to $8,000.

The tenant has appealed this incredible rent hike to the city, but it may be too late. He may find himself out of his apartment before the city's rent board decides if it's legal or not. One thing is certain -- it's one of the highest rent increases in recent history in San Francisco....

"I lived here a long time," said Neil Hutchinson. "I pay my rent on time."

But apparently, that wasn't enough to satisfy his landlord. He raised his rent from $1,800 a month to a whopping $8,000 a month. No reason given.

I was born and raised here, and it's becoming nearly impossible for those without a very high income to make ends meet

As long as they give 30 days notice.

The real question is why even offer that to the tenants that you know can't afford it? Why not just decline to renew the lease altogether?

Like Santa Monica in SoCal. The landlord is hoping to get the tenant out before the rent board can rule on the case.

San Francisco's rent control law covers most rental property in San Francisco. If you live in San Francisco, you are usually covered by rent control. The major exceptions are: You live in a rental unit with a certificate of occupancy after June 13, 1979, with a few exceptions.
