5. The hoary "Governor Moonbeam" tag had nothing to do with New Age stuff.

Gov. Brown release 1.0 proposed what would then have been a cutting-edge satellite network for the state, to reduce the need for travel to and from Sac. His detractors latched on to it, and "Gov. Moonbeam" was born.

6. I understood Brown wanted to establish communication system not dependent on land lines ....

A system that would not be disrupted during natural (and man-made) disasters.

The Moonbeam moniker was coined when he had one of his famous "Thinking outside the box" moments and suggested a laser beam signal could be bounced off the moon, but he quickly couched that idea when it was pointed out the moon isn't always up there to cooperate.
