San Jose: Man pleads guilty in false tax refund scheme

SAN JOSE — A 57-year-old San Jose man has pleaded guilty to filing false federal tax returns that resulted in more than $1.5 million in fraudulent refunds, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Trong Minh Nguyen, also known as John Nguyen, entered his plea Thursday in U.S. District Court in San Jose.

Prosecutors said Nguyen began preparing false returns in May 2012. He reportedly told unemployed individuals in the San Jose area that he could secure refunds on their behalf, then used their personal information and false information to prepare returns.

Nguyen charged fees ranging from $50 to $500 and was typically paid after a refund was issued, according to court documents.
