Online dating website eHarmony has settled a consumer protection lawsuit for misleading customers, and has paid out $1.28 million to four counties and one city in California.
The lawsuit was brought by the district attorneys of four Northern California counties Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Shasta, Napa as well as the city of Santa Monica.
The complaint against eHarmony, filed in Santa Cruz County Superior Court, alleged the company failed to explain its subscription-fee policy, which led to unexpected charges for consumers. The complaint also alleged eHarmony did not provide a contract explaining the service, nor did it explain the cancellation procedure.
As part of the settlement, eHarmony has also agreed to pay up to an additional $1 million in restitution to any present or former California users who are or were enrolled in automatic billing for subscription payments between certain dates. Eligible users will be notified.

(16,875 posts)I honestly had no issues canceling my eharmony account over ten years ago, but perhaps things have changed. What I can tell you is this, my wife and I will celebrate our ten year anniversary this summer thanks to eharmony. At that time, eharmomy was pretty new and, because of brutal bretrayls and hurt, we both used the services built in email/messaging service for months before we exchanged contact information. In fact, at that time, our non-tech savvy families would have been so appalled that we met online that for years, even after we were married, we told friends and family that we initially me on a plane, like thats much better, lol!
