A $70 million makeover of the aging Town and Country resort in Mission Valley (San Diego) won approval Tuesday from the San Diego City Council after the developer reached agreements with organized labor to safeguard existing jobs and not stand in the way of unionizing hotel workers.

The hotel's 954 rooms would be reduced to 700, and conference space would be downsized as well. Four new residential towers, with parking, would be built on the eastern and southern fringes of the site on Hotel Circle North.
Known for years as a destination for family vacations and modest-sized conventions, the Town and Country began life as a 46-room motor inn in 1953, set amid farmland and pastures. It wasnt until 1970 that the convention center and a 10-story hotel tower opened.

(4,930 posts)centers and condo throughout. Several years ago before the last drought we had a really wet winter. I remember driving by Fashion Valley Mall (immediately to the north of the convention center) and saw the lower lever parking garage totally flooded....at least 6 feet of water in some areas....and poking though the water the tops of cars and trucks.

(51,584 posts)I have books from San Diego showing pictures comparing 100 years ago and now. The growth is scary! 100 years ago, there were no trees anywhere either (desert). My friends remember dairy farms in Mission Valley whose cows were drowned by flash floods over 50 years ago. I do not want to be here in 100 years, thank you very much. Too crowded and not pretty.
