A California city's {Dixon} vice mayor is facing calls to resign after writing a stunningly anti-gay post on his website that calls gay men "faries" and "tinker bells," and suggests they don't have jobs or families. The post features an LGBT Pride flag with the "no" symbol on top of it.
"Now hundreds of millions of the rest of us can celebrate our month, peaking on July 4th, as healthy, heterosexual, fairly monogamous, keep our kinky stuff to ourselves, Americans," Ted Hickman wrote June 28. "We do it with our parades in every state and county in this country with families celebrating together."
"We honor our country and our veterans who have made all of this possible (including for the tinker bells)," he wrote, referring to gay men, as CBS Sacramento reports (video below), "and we can do it with actual real pride, not some put on show just to help our inferior complex 'show we are different' type of crap."
Hickman insists straight people "ARE different from them
We work, have families, (and babies we make) enjoy and love the company (and marriage) of the opposite sex and dont flaunt our differences dressing up like faries and prancing by the thousands in a parade in nearby San Francisco to be televised all over the world," he lamented.

(2,768 posts)I wonder if we could get on the horn and trade em a couple of pride and history months for a 50% stake in that privilege to not be randomly harassed and/or killed for existing.

(36,407 posts)He used to be the editor for the local (paper of record) newspaper, but now writes for a local right wing rag. He's always trying to be cute by jabbing sticks at things to shake things up, but this one really backfired on him; everyone is dumping on him, including his kids.
I suspect he will endure THIS storm and the recall will go nowhere, but come November, he's up for reelection, and will be facing a totally wacky Libertarian. A Libertarian who used to sit on the city council until he tried running for city mayor and lost. Oh, and he's a writer at the same damn right wing rag, and the editor will totally support the wacky Libertarian.
Our local politics are ugly, especially when you consider Hickman is one of the 'good guys' protecting us from slash and burn anarchy.

(36,407 posts)Three hours of citizens eloquently speaking, with an abbreviated council meeting sandwiched in the middle (I can NOW legally grow up to six pot plants OUTDOORS! No permits, nothing.).
All week long, rumors of violence were running rampant, perpetuated by Ted's cronies. But when push came to shove, the 'Good Old Boys' supporting Ted Hickman folded like a cheap lawn chair and didn't bother to show up. Our team won! Hell, even Ted's granddaughter, dressed as a fairy, addressed the other council members and didn't even look at him. Sad and illuminating at the same time.

I was extremely happy to see people from all walks of life feel compelled to step up and speak. If one is willing to sit through the entire 3 1/2 hours, here's the city video (or just jump around and pick up on the flavor and tenor of the speakers):

By state law, Hickman can NOT be recalled this close to the November election, but it's almost certain he will be censured by the other very angry council members.
