I strongly suspect that most of the people who voted for his first term thought they were voting for his father, who served 14 terms in the House. They thought, that is, that they were voting for the experience and power of an incumbent Representative, because he left the "Jr." off of his campaign signs. Maybe he used his father's signs from previous campaigns.
