Car registration fees on old car went up over 30%

I was shocked to say the least!

The registration fees for my car (a 2002 Honda) went up over 30%+ for 2018-2019!

Does anyone know why?

Please let me know if you have a clue.

I searched around and could find no reason as to why this happened.

Thanks in advance!

The testing keeps a small group of people well employed. So your exhaust thought is BUNK.......I do live in a county with 50,000 people in the mountains. No SMOG test required EVER. cheers THE BURNING IN FIREPLACES IS ALSO OUTLAWED.......NOT WHERE I LIVE........

Said car only has 50,000 on it.

I do not want nor do I need a new car.

It runs just fine. In fact I just had a tune-up done on it last week.

Here in one of the poorer counties of east TN, it costs $88.00 for an average car. The richer county next to us charges $12. Antique cars are even more. It's what they call a hidden tax.

Now it is $139.

I hope they spend the extra money fixing the roads up. They are filled with pot holes where I live.

Why the flat fee and not a graduated fee for the less privileged? There are other ways to fund road repairs.

I mean I remember a time when once you bought the car and registered it the 1st time, you were done. Then they introduced pollution inspection stickers that you had to pay for every year. And now there is an annual fee for the privilege of driving on crappy roads.

It's a way of taxing the poor and middle class and pretending like they didn't tax you.

I drive to work through Oakland, which has terrible streets. I'll be interested to see if any get fixed.

Most States were forced to move in this direction. Increases in any Sales Tax or Income Tax just would not fly because of slow wage growth and decreased Business Tax revenues.

and registering them cost a lot more than regular registration

The proceeds go to various California environmental funds, so I was happy to oblige

There are at least 250k California drivers with them!!
