The Sierra snowpack doubled in size in February: These photos prove it

The California Department of Water Resources reported Thursday that the Sierra snowpack is now 153 percent of average to date. For comparison, the snowpack was 67 percent of average on Jan. 1.

A manual measurement at Phillips Station off U.S. 50 near Sierra-at-Tahoe found a snow depth of 113 inches (287 centimeters) and a snow water equivalent of 43.5 inches (110.5 centimeters), more than double what was recorded there in January.

That's normal over here in the Rockies, we got the same thing this past week. Gonna get probably at least half as much again this week.

And for those who thinks it isn't normal, you must not have been around before the 1990s,

I was just ribbin' ya. I got trapped by road closures, due to snow, for five days this past week. Just made it home today, was supposed to be home last Monday. I would have been screwed if I didn't have friends in the town I was "just visiting", all my pal and I had were our ski duds. We couldn't get back to the pal's house because the passes were all closed, from Sunday afternoon to Thurs am. Must have been about nine or ten feet of snow. It snowed for five days, solid with sustained winds of 30+mph for most of that time with gusts that were loud and screaming. I was up at the continental divide after all. It made me kind of miss living there.

totally saturated with so much rain, so I really shouldn't be surprised at how much snow-pack there is up there.

To know this water will hydrate California for the year is a welcome thought
