Blue porch lights to support autism bring trouble for East Bay homeowner
The White House did it. So did the Empire State Building, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower and some 10,000 other landmark buildings.
But when a Discovery Bay mother of an autistic son turned her porch lights blue to support World Autism Awareness Day, she got slapped with a non-compliance notice and warning of a $100 fine if she did not turn them off within seven days.
Lisa McBride, a 16-year resident of Discovery Bays Lakeshore Gated Community, last week was told by her homeowners association that she had violated its CC&Rs, even though the rules do not specifically address the color of exterior home lights. Shes been changing the color of her porch lights for the past five years without any pushback, until a letter dated April 4 two days after World Autism Awareness Day said blue porch lights arent allowed.
By Monday, after receiving calls and emails, the homeowners associations manager relented, McBride said. The manager, Tony Abad of Willis Management Group Inc., wrote to her that he was unaware of National Autism Awareness Month and she should disregard the letter, McBride said.
