California's latest gas tax increase is about to kick in. Here's what you can expect.

Traveling by car this summer? Better budget more for gas.

Beginning July 1, California’s gas tax increases from 41.7 cents to 47.3 cents per gallon, a 5.6 cent increase in the price of fuel.

The tax increase is an annual adjustment to the tax the state applies to a gallon of gas. In 2016, Californians paid about 28 cents in state taxes for a gallon of gas.

The rate climbed by 12 cents per gallon in 2017 after the Legislature passed a 10-year tax and fee increase that aims to raise about $52 billion for transportation projects.

The problem with this is that it will hurt those who can least afford it. Unlike the East Coast, still_one Jun 2019 #1

I've been visiting from the East Coast since my daughter moved to LA a few years ago.

The gas prices are astronomical! Plus where's the subway? The only subway only works at rush hour and what if
I wanted to avoid traffic at some other time.

DC, New York so much better. What's wrong with you people?

Sorry, I love Cali but it is very expensive.

I can speak with what happened to BART here in Northern California. San Mateo voted not to have BART go their San Mateo because they didn't want to pay extra taxes.

What I am saying essentially the elected politicians didn't do their job, and much of the population was extremely short-sighted. That is how I see it.

Now there is pretty good consensus that we have a major transportation problem in California, and we have voted in propositions to address it, and elected representatives to do something about it, but it is still going to time.

As for this gas tax, what they should do is have it means tested, so those under a certain income will be exempt, or get a credit or refund. That probably isn't going to happen.

At least it seems we now trying to do something, but it is going to take a long time

Oh sure, it's going to cost a little more money to extend BART and yada, yada, yada. So they build a secondary system -- a transfer! Totally defeats the purpose of quick and easy trip. I'll spend more for a taxi or Lyft.

The billions of dollars in federal money that has gone to defense contractors and 1% tax cuts has extraordinary deep consequences.

You lost me at your broad brush, generalized comment. Not all of us are responsible for the public transportation, and honestly, you can take your "you people" comments else where.
