County health officials announced late Friday night that a 2-year-old child has died and three other children between 2 and 13 years old have become ill after having contact with animals at the San Diego County Fair.
The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency reported four confirmed pediatric cases of Shig-toxin-producing E. coli known as STEC linked to contact with the animals.
Officials from the HHSAs Epidemiology Program and County Department of Environmental Health are investigating the cluster of four infections, officials said.
The four children who fell ill visited the fair between June 8 and June 15, and began showing symptoms between June 10 and June 16.

(33,643 posts)of course the worst of it ... thoughts going out to all afflicted ... but on top of it, this sort of thing increases the distrust of the natural world, our animal brethren ... this will cause some readers to think that 'nature' is dangerous and to be distrusted ... in reality this was likely caused by conditions the animals at the Fair were kept in by humans, but a lot of people won't perceive it that way, and blame the animals.
That reality makes this whole thing all the more sad to me

(22,004 posts)This is why petting zoos started providing hand sanitizer. There was an outbreak of kids getting sick.
Moral: Wash your hands after petting animals. Its the parents responsibility to make sure they do.
