https://www.politicalgarbagechute.com/homeless-ca-alabama/"I can say without a shadow of a doubt Id rather live here in California, where the air is cleaner, the weather is warmer, and I can get real Mexican food than in any shit hole red state, Rigglesby said. I used to be a stock broker and day trader. When the economy took a dump in in 2007, I freefalled financially for a time, and eventually wound up on the streets. But before then, I tried reducing my cost of living by moving from New York to Alabama. Worst mistake of my life.
"That state sucks. The politics are so hard right that there are no services whatsoever, and the people are dumb as shit because they dont fund their schools well enough. You know, on account of taxes being theft or whatever, Herb said. Im even a pretty fiscally conservative guy, but even I have a limit of how much inbred stupidity Im willing to subject myself to.

(26,598 posts)Escaping the cold Colorado winter. Feels like Mexico with everyone speaking Spanish. Little girl around 10 speaking Spanish to her mom turned around and gave me directions in perfect English. I feel dumb.
Heard this joke. What do you call someone who knows 3 languages? Trilingual
What do you call someone who knows 2 languages? Bilingual.
What do you call someone who knows 1 language? American.

(51,563 posts)Most of my 1st graders were bilingual since most were from Asian countries or Spanish speaking countries. I felt like the dumb dumb. They were fantastic when we would get a new student who didn't speak English and they would fight over who would sit next to him/her and help them out with translating. They even translated for me and their parents during conferences.
I learned in Second Lang training that the part of the brain that learns languages is huge up until the age of about 10 and then it shrinks to about the size of a lima bean by 25 years old. That made me feel a little better.

My lima bean has probably shriveled to just about nothing these days. Languages have always been very difficult for me .

Its highly possible that this learning difference by age is not due to some magic change in brain plasticity, but simply that adults dont have as much time to be exposed as children and often hit a point where it stops being helpful to improve after a while. They become totally fluent at this slower pace and reaching native-level mastery provides little additional advantage. Maybe its not that its harder for older learners or that theyre not capable, maybe its just that they dont have the same opportunity.

(2,190 posts)And more and more homeless people keep coming here every year to stretch it thinner. It sounds like this guy was choosing between being homeless in Alabama (since he couldn't keep up his house payments) or homeless in California.
Frankly, it annoys me to read about someone who came here to be homeless. I can't afford to own property in California, where I'm licensed to work. When I retire it'll definitely be to somewhere much cheaper, and the political climate will be fairly far down on my list of concerns.
