A Freedom Rider Might Win in San Diego!

Fingers crossed, it's looking good for Bob Filner for Mayor in San Diego

I was overcome with emotion today voting for Bob Filner for mayor. We went to the same university though at different ends of the sixties. "Our" Freedom Riders were legendary. Their selfless courage risking their lives to fight against segregation in Mississippi brought us who followed them both inspiration and hope to demonstrate and combat an unjust war and, at Cornell, educational discrimination.

I never imagined that fifty years later and nearly three thousand miles away, I would be given this huge honor to be able to vote for Bob Filner. Or that, ironically, the background noise and visuals today would be of voters standing for hours to exercise
their still embattled constitutional rights.

It's too early to know if Filner will win for Mayor...we won't know for a few hours. Worth pulling an "all nighter" like the good old days in Risley. But whether Filner wins or loses, I got to vote today for a person I've admired my entire adult life. Who would have thought?

Thank you Bob Filner for fighting the good fight your whole life. If you win as mayor, the truly democratic and inclusive soul of our city will soar.
