(San Diego) Old Globe theater cancels summer season

For the first time in over 70 years the Old Globe theater won't be presenting a summer season of Shakespeare in the Park. Artistic director Barry Edelstein says, unfortunately, the coronavirus pandemic has made it impossible to prepare for a traditional performance.

The Old Globe is still presenting Shakespeare though, just online. "We're doing that with our education work where I am talking about shakespeare; last night we did a 90 minute program with very famous actors, live online," explained Edelstein. Edlestein says they're reaching more people than ever online, but that's not to say the coronavirus hasn't dealt the Globe and so many other San Diego area theatres a huge blow.

"The crisis that we're in is a jobs crisis and we need to keep people employed," he said. With that in mind, The Old Globe and others have joined together to create "One Theatre One Story, showcasing what they offer to the community and asking for your help. "That's why we're going to San Diego and saying 'hey do whatever you can, it'll help no matter how small'," Edelstein said.

And he's positive that just like after World War II, they'll come back stronger than ever, "That's what's gonna happen this time, I'm absolutely sure."
