CA Unemployment - Latest News

I was surprised today when I got an email from EDD saying I had a week of benefits to certify. Itís usually two weeks at a time, so I wasnít expecting to certify until next Sunday.

After I certified, the site informed me that my last payment of $450 on my current claim will be made (plus the $600 from the Feds). It looks like a new, extended phase of UI benefits starts July 1. I found this online:

Additional Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits soon available for long term unemployed

The EDD is finalizing the details of a separate extension of regular UI benefits that will soon become available for those who are struggling to return to a job in the midst of this coronavirus pandemic. The Federal-State Extended Duration benefits program, known in California as FED-ED, only becomes available during times of high or prolonged periods of unemployment. It will offer up to at least 13 weeks of additional benefits for those who run out of their initial benefits on their regular state UI claim, as well as any benefits they are eligible for on the current 13-week federal Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) extension. The first week a claimant could be exhausting a current PEUC claim is next week. The EDD is sweeping our systems and will be automatically filing a new FED-ED claim for those potentially eligible. More details will become available next week.

This will no doubt effect millions of unemployed workers in CA. I have to say that outside of a single system glitch at EDD, filing for and receiving UI benefits has been a very smooth and reliable process for me.

1. I hope Congress

gets their shit together and extends the $600 payments beyond July. If those payments stop in a month the economic shit is going to hit the fan big time.

2. Indeed. It's the only thing keeping our finances together for us.

It sure would be nice for Congress to pass the Heroes Act that the House already passed. Just to have some notion of what the future holds beyond a week or two would be a relief.
