Californians asked to conserve energy on Friday due to heat

The California Independent System Operator, or ISO, has issued a statewide Flex Alert.

ISO is asking people across the state to voluntarily conserve electricity from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 14.

The National Weather Service has issued excessive heat watches and warnings for portions of California.

Prolonged heat over several consecutive days is expected to drive electricity demand higher as nighttime temperatures are also forecast to be above average.

The ISO recommends people use major appliances before 3 p.m. and after 10 p.m. and set air conditioner thermostats to 78 degrees or higher.

I'm a cold-weather kid, don't know how I ended up where I ended up.

I just looked at the extended forecast for the next week. The low is 70, there is a predicted high of 99 for next Wednesday, and you can always tack on five to six degrees to anything they predict.

But compared to Las Vegas, it's downright cool here! 😱

You keep telling me that. Please.

Now it's 100°. And we haven't even hit the worst part of the day!

You weren't kidding about not moving around. I'm sitting in a recliner, ceiling fan going, tower fan across the room going. Just waiting till it hits 82° before the AC kicks in. I can't tolerate it any hotter than that in the house.

I'm on all electric. I inherited this place. Definitely wasn't my idea of the perfect place to spend the rest of my life. And I would have made sure there was gas as well as electric.

I live in SDG&E land. I think they are the most expensive utility company on the planet. My neighbors regularly have $500 a month electric bills. I'm a tightwad, and I can't afford a $500 bill. My bill is normally around $70 a month. I think this month it will be closer to $200, if this keeps up. OUCH!

We are Solar plus NV Energy. Sure tell when the sun gets blow the roof lines and the regular power kicks in.

Just checked 104 right now. That is in the shade. 115 on the Patio under the awning. But,it is a dry heat. Heat warnings until Wednesday night.

Worst we have had was June of 2007,117 in the shade and 127 on the patio. Over night low was 102,that was a bit nasty. Fried all our Flowers within minutes.

But my normal bill is usually lower than what the solar bill would be. But with the way the climate has changed, I really need to look into it. I'm on a small, fixed income. So if something goes up in one area, I have to get rid of something else to make up for it.

A few years ago, we actually had a day here where it was 116°. It was actually hotter than Las Vegas that day. Couldn't believe my own eyes as I was looking at the thermometer!

I've been in 10° below, (sure it was much worse with the wind chill factor,) and I was happy as could be.
I'm one of these weird people who gets more energy the colder it gets. And when it gets hot? I turn into a sloth!

Even though you have a dry heat, I don't think I could take it. 127°?

I have avocado trees. They like a few days of warm weather. By the time this latest heat wave is over, I'm sure I won't have an avocado left on the tree. Every time we get a heat wave like this, the trees drop all the avocados within a few days. And I was so looking forward to lots of guacamole this summer. I just didn't want to have to eat all of it at one time!

And there's no end in sight. I tried to open up over an hour ago, too humid. And a skunk sprayed in the neighborhood, so there was that.

I opened up the door five minutes ago, still too humid, but at least the skunk smell is gone. Things are looking up!

I've never had an electric bill higher than $75.
I'm very sure this month it's going to be well over $200.

I know you live in California-- is PG&E your power supplier? I just received an email from them saying customers need to conserve power between the hours of 3:00pm & 10:00pm, else they'll shut off the power. (the hottest hours of the day-- great)

Here in the Bay Area (north bay) it's currently 52% humidity and 77 degrees

I'm not kidding, it seems like there is a notice in our bill every month for a rate increase. Greedy SOB'S.

I get all of the alerts, and we have had that same email for the past three days.

Does your email tell you that you're supposed to pre-cool your house before 3 p.m.? If I did that, I'd be spending even more money. It would take all of one hour for it to go back up to where it was when I started. I just leave it set at 82°. Uncomfortable, but tolerable. I have ceiling fans and floor fans, and those are going most of the day.

Just went outside again. I don't know what the percentage is for the humidity, but it's humid enough to think about getting in the shower and running cold water over me! I couldn't open up last night and I don't think I will be able to tonight. My phone says it's 75° outside. It feels more like 85. Ugh!

"PG&E strongly encourages customers to conserve energy and cooling homes in the morning hours."

Which does not work-- if it's 74 degrees indoors in the early morning, and I open up the doors to get some cross-ventilation going, the indoor temp will maybe fall to 71 degrees. But the minute I close up the house, the temperature goes right back up.

I thought about a cool shower but we're having a drought on top of everything else.

Hang in there!!

I did, but a lot of people called bullshit as you would expect. It was them damned "Califoreigners", and no way they would cut back to help them! Of course it fazed none of the assholes that it turned out to be Enron crooks. By the time we found that out, from responsible media, they forgot to be mad about it.
