Pressure Mounts on Newsom Over Pick to Succeed Harris as California's New Senator

With Kamala Harris set to become vice president of the United States next month, Gov. Gavin Newsom is under growing pressure to fill her U.S. Senate seat with someone who reflects the state’s diversity.

And in a state as diverse as California, whatever choice the governor makes is bound to disappoint at least some of his supporters.

“This is not something that I wish even on my worst enemy, because you create enemies in this process,” Newsom said on Election Day when the outcome was still hypothetical.

Asked what kind of person Newsom would choose to fill Harris' seat for the remaining two years of her term, he mused about a few of the considerations.

I am also of the belief that Feinstein should retire and would like to see Alex Padilla tapped for that seat.

Bass would be an excellent senator. So would Lee, Waters, Schiff, Swalwell, Porter, Spieir, and many other representatives. And if we hadn't lost all those seats in Congress this election I'd be happy with any of them. However, Democrats need to think strategically: we're down to a, what, a ten vote margin in the House? Keep chipping away at that and in two years we might see another California Speaker of the House - Keven McCarthy.

No. Biden and Harris are going to have enough problems with the other two branches of government as it is. Let's not put further obstacles in their way.

I’d love to see Porter get tapped, but, I know her district trends red.

In other words.....My views are based in the full understanding of the choices.

But after seeing several Democratic districts swing to the GOP this year I'm not taking anything for granted. Plus, it takes time to organize a special election, and that's time when we're down a seat in Congress.
