Weekend flash flood watch issued for parts of S.F. North Bay, Peninsula

Sunday “the season’s first atmospheric river” is set to come through — a narrow band of intense moisture that brings intense, heavy rainfall, especially along the coast, Drew Peterson, an NWS, said.

While all regions of the Bay Area should see rainfall this weekend, areas on the coast, especially in the North Bay, can expect the most, up to several inches, he said.

Atmospheric rivers, which bring “very concentrated, high rates of rain that are not typical with normal storms,” Peterson said, also bring other concerns like gusty winds and very large waves at the coast — NWS is expecting gusty winds between 30 and 50 mph, and waves as large as 20 to 30 feet at the Bay Area’s beaches.
