LOS ANGELES - Ten weeks after four people were shot at an on-campus Halloween party, USC officials are readying new safety checkpoints to prohibit uninvited campus access at night.
Starting with the spring semester, guests will need an invitation from a student or employee, and government ID to walk or drive onto the privately-owned university at night.
Pedestrian gates are being completed around the campus, where guards will check guests in against invitations between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. They are the first access restrictions to pedestrians at the privately-owned university in modern history.
"We will still be a welcoming place," said Vice President for Student Affairs Michael L. Jackson in announcing that the gates, which will be locked overnight for the first time on Jan. 14. "That is the goal."

I'm not really sure if this is the best solution.

(18,348 posts)1. A university as a gated community
If our local university gates up, then I will lose a place to walk my dogs at night.

Times when you're probably not walking your dogs.

with the pupsters. When get home from work, hit a kid's concert, help with homework, sometimes your time gets pushed later.

I like to attend events there and park off campus. It is a rough neighborhood -- and students are paying such high prices - this was bound to happen.

I'm waiting to here back on a grad school app from USC
The entry way at the Expo line stations better be some of the 8 entries they're keeping open.
