Bill to raise CA minimum wage to $9.25 clears Assembly
A bill to raise California's minimum wage to $9.25 over the next three years won approval Thursday in the state Assembly. Assembly Bill 10 by Assemblyman Luis Alejo, D-Salinas, passed 45-25 mostly along party lines. It would be the first bump in minimum wage since 2008, when it was raised by 50 cents to $8. "The last time the minimum wage was increased, gas was $3.25 a gallon in California," Alejo said. "I don't know about you, but I haven't seen gas prices at that level in a long time."

The California Chamber of Commerce listed Alejo's bill on its annual list of "job killers," saying it unfairly raises employers' costs of doing business in the state.

Alejo disagreed that his bill would slow the economic recovery. "When minimum wage workers have more money, they spend it," he said. The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration.

Good news about the minimum wage bill - hope the Senate agrees.
Who's paying minimum wage? Retail, food service (mainly fast food) and, in California, fruit and vegetable growers (if that ). Is Walmart going to move all their stores to Nevada or Oregon and make us drive there to shop? Or McDonald's? Are the growers just going to let the Central Valley, where half the country's produce is grown, sit idle? As Al would have said to Tim on Home Improvement, "I don't think so."
Case in point: San Jose raised its minimum wage to $10 an hour at the beginning of this year. The coalition against it was (surprise) mostly led by restaurants, including Jack in the Box (a regional burger chain) and a chain of pizza joints called, for real, Pizza My Heart. They threatened to close down and make everybody drive out of San Jose, which measures about 16 by 10 miles, to Santa Clara or Campbell for a burger or pizza. Well, guess what? January 1 came and went, and they're still here. The sky isn't falling.
