saw that in San Francisco's Marina neighborhood in 1989. Carports usually are not designed with the same load-bearing ability of residential units unless that's been changed in newer building codes. That will have to be addressed.

Even then ... tiny, dark, claustrophobic, and very scary.

If the units are affordable, I personally value people over cars, but that is generally called into question around here and elsewhere.

9. The problem is that developers don't want to build affordable housing

They only want to build McMansions, and most people can't afford them.

I live in Pittsburgh where we do still have affordable housing, but it's in the city not the suburbs. The houses are older and require some work and upkeep. Brand-new houses don't usually require that. Any young people who want to put in the time and sweat equity to fix up an old house, they can do well in Pittsburgh because we have many available choices.

I'm not sure if that's true in California, but people keep moving there anyway for the jobs.

12. The landlord is only giving them a $200/month credit for loss of their parking space? What a joke!

A reserved, covered parking spot is worth at least $400 a month in tight neighborhoods like that in LA. And many tenants would never have signed the lease if it had no parking spot. The landlord is really screwing over those tenants.

The landlord will probably lease out those ADUs for $3000 a month!
