Primary brings mixed results for CA LGBTQ legislative candidates
The two bisexual politicos who ran for an open North Bay state Assembly seat fell short in Tuesdays primary, according to the unofficial returns. They were among a number of nonincumbent LGBTQ candidates for state legislative seats running across California this year.
Several are now headed to the fall ballot and could make state LGBTQ political history if they win their respective races. The November 3 general election could see the first out state legislator from the Fresno area be sent to Sacramento, while the ranks of Southern Californian out legislators could grow.
All of the current Democratic members of the Legislative LGBTQ Caucus up for reelection this year are moving on, having taken first place in their respective primary contests. The only one from the Bay Area this year is bisexual Assemblymember Alex Lee (D-San Jose), who took first place with nearly 62% as of Wednesday morning in his race for the Assembly District 24 seat that spans Alameda and Santa Clara counties.
The lone competitive legislative primary in the Bay Area with out contenders was the contest for the Assembly District 12 seat straddling Marin and Sonoma counties. It is open due to Assemblymember Damon Connolly (D-San Rafael) running for a state Senate seat this year.
