The Puente Hills thrust fault, which appeared to be responsible for Tuesday's predawn magnitude 4.4 earthquake that shook much of the Los Angeles area, is capable of generating earthquakes up to magnitude 7.5 -- massive shakers larger than any in the modern history of the Los Angeles Basin.

2. Well, we both live kinda far from there

and the arrows point the other way! So I guess that's good!

This reminds me to limit trips East of the 405

We stick pretty close to home, normally.

12. Well the arrow don't point toward danger.

They indicate the direction the plates are moving at the fault line, which means nothing about the effect of shock waves in the event of a quake. Shock waves will move essentially equally in all directions, and damage will occur pretty much as much in the direction away from plate movement as toward it.

Just kidding. I'm a little more worried about how a big quake there would involve other area faults.

There's one near me in Santa Monica. In 1994 a wave hit the Santa Monica mountains and rolled back hitting a new wave right near the San Vincente fault and it caused a lot of damage.

So we're probably not safe on the Westside either.

Somehow I'm immune and don't truly feel worried. One gets blases after a while.

I like that one better than go under a table since I don't have a good one, or stand in a doorway.

One thing you might want to do is think about how you'd get outside if you had to. I know someone who bought a mini ladder so she could scale down from the second floor if necessary!

Lets just hope that one never catches LA during rush hour or midday when friends and families are all scattered about.

11. I drove home from Hollywood a couple of hours before the

big one in 1994. The part of the 10 I drove over buckled at 4am on a Sunday.

In spite of that earthquakes seem pretty survivable, really!

8. I live right on top of the Sierra Madre Fault.

I haven't heard many dire predictions related to it though.
Whew.

for the next big big one.

The religious nuts will be blaming the movies and related sin, etc.

15. I'm just a few miles NE of downtown.

I meant to sign up for earthquake insurance this year but was working really long hours when the renewal came up and didn't go through my mail at the time. I still don't remember seeing the letter this year. Next year I'm adding it for sure!
