CHULA VISTA Sweetwater Superintendent Ed Brand, who collected a pension while he was paid to lead the district for over a year, may lose more than $200,000 in future pension benefits because of rules that might have banned him from collecting the two checks at the same time.
Brand stopped taking the pension checks in October 2012 and the state has been reviewing the situation ever since.
Its been an open file those two years, said Ricardo Duran, spokesman for the California State Teachers Retirement System.
Asked why it has taken so long, Duran said, Its just these are very complex investigations. You have to take a look at all the evidence and even with that, you have to take it through a review process internally through CalSTRS and it takes awhile to reach a finding. Duran said he didnt know when a decision will be reached.
