3 billion gallons of oil industry wastewater has been injected illegally into California Aquifers

?1412967071

Almost 3 billion gallons of oil industry wastewater have been illegally dumped into central California aquifers that supply drinking water and farming irrigation, according to state documents obtained by the Center for Biological Diversity. The wastewater entered the aquifers through at least nine injection disposal wells used by the oil industry to dispose of waste contaminated with fracking fluids and other pollutants.

I am horrified beyond all measure.

How do we stop these criminals from doing any more of this?

but what we have is polluted probably in higher concentrations than originally (criminally) expected.

He weaseled his way into a position of power and handed his criminal pals a free pass via the "Halliburton Loophole," an exemption for gas drilling and extraction from requirements in the underground injection control (UIC) program of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA).

There is a depth of evil in operation that we cannot accept as status quo any more.

The map leads one to think the injection wells and their pollution are in the Salinas River watershed.

I looked at PDF attachments describing the injection wells. They seem to be in Kern County, California.

I am confused where all the injection wells and ground water pollution really is located.

I live in San Luis Obispo County and much of our water supply comes from Santa Margarita Lake near the headwaters of the Salinas River.

I read through the Daily Kos OP and the map was questioned several times with no response or change.

These sites are in Kern Co.

It's still obscene but maybe a little less so than if it were in SLO Co.

They don't clean themselves out.
Those aquifers have been taken from us and will never be given back.

And watch how a small token fine, which is an expected cost of business, will be the only restitution anyone gives for eliminating sources of water for the rest of is.
