Thousands without power in Boulder County as wind gusts top 90 mph

The Boulder area traded a white Christmas for a windy one.

Winds held steady above 60 mph throughout the city up until Sunday evening, according to the National Weather Service, with gusts near or above 90 mph recorded in multiple foothills locations, including NCAR, Gold Hill and Rocky Flats.

The winds downed power lines and caused thousands of outages throughout Boulder and Broomfield counties, with 3,000 losing power in the Table Mesa area, 2,000 losing power Sunday afternoon in south Boulder, and another 1,500 losing power in the area of downtown Louisville.

About 1,000 were also without power over the afternoon in the area of the Broomfield Industrial Center.

I've lived in Boulder, and in my time there, despite LOTS of very high winds, I don't recall ever losing power. More to the point, I lived in the Table Mesa area.

What I do recall best was lying in bed at night, listening to the wind, and then the next morning on the radio finding out just what the wind speeds were. After not very long, I got so I could correctly guess, to within 5mph, just how hard the wind had been blowing.

Not sure if I've retained that skill.

Another semi-useless skill I used to have was being able to put my hand in a pool and know what the water temp was to within 2 degrees.
