Carrie Ann Lucas Dies At Age 47, You Probably Haven't Heard Of Her and That's a Problem

Yesterday, February 24th, the disability rights advocate community lost one of its mightiest members, Carrie Ann Lucas. Lucas was a nationally known disability rights attorney and a mother of four children, each of whom are adopted and living with disabilities. She was only 47 years old.

Her death was announced by family and friends on her Facebook page: “[Lucas] died after an arbitrary denial from an insurance company caused a plethora of health problems, exacerbating her disabilities and eventually leading to her premature death.”

Lucas lived with a rare form of muscular dystrophy, which slowly progressed and she became reliant on a power wheelchair and a ventilator during the last few years of her life. She also lived with type 1 diabetes, as well as hearing and vision difficulties.

Would love to see an investigation into how this decision was made. There ought to be penalties for insurance companies but in this brutal world, they are doing god's work per republicans.

This is why I'm so strong an advocate for healthcare. There is NO excuse, in a society like ours, for a woman to die because some beancounter at an insurance company made a decision against the patient but for shareholder profits.

Profit IS a dirty word when it comes to healthcare.

I'd urge all of you to support Elizabeth Warren's 'Accountable Capitalism Act' she introduced in August 2018. This law, if passed, would end the primacy of the shareholder and expand the fiduciary responsibility of CEOs to include the welfare of workers, consumers and the environment.

That would solve a hell of a lot of problems.

You can take one situation, and it's subjective as to whether a corporate action includes the welfare of the workers and consumers. I think the environment is a bit clearer.

That's the problem with this sort of legislation. It's subjective. Unless there are specific things outlined.

to put X% of workers on their boards of directors - I forget the exact percentage, but the idea is to get a little democracy flowing.

Nowadays, they're wanting to be our doctors, drug supplier and hospital provider as well. In normal times we might hear some alarm bells in Congress regarding monopolistic business practices, but Republicans simply don't care about controlling businesses in any way.

I hope Speaker Pelosi is looking at this issue......
