Denver Metro is getting a new area code next spring: 983 (sigh....)

I still bemoan the fact that my cell prefix is not 303, but 720, though the rest of the digits are easy to remember so... There is that.

Meet your new area code — 983

Come 2022, Denver will have a third area code. Joining the metro area’s 303 and 720 overlay area will be 983, the Colorado Public Utilities Commission announced Thursday.

According to the PUC, the current 303 and 720 area codes were projected to run out of available phone numbers by the fourth quarter of 2022. The new 983 is expected to last 25 years.

The third area code is another sign, just as 2022’s gain of an eighth congressional seat, that Colorado is growing.

Area code 303 was first established as Colorado’s area code in 1947. The Numbering Plan Area in 1988 created a geographic split, adding 719. In 1995, the 303 NPA was split again, creating the 970 NPA. Finally, in 1998 the 720 NPA was implemented as an overlay for the 303 NPA, basically the Denver metro.

The 303/720/983 will cover central Colorado, mainly covering Denver, Arapahoe, Jefferson, Adams, Boulder and Douglas counties with some land just outside metro Denver.

I remember telling some visitors they had to use 10-digit dialing at our house even for local calls, way back when.
