A historic theater in Stratford went up in flames early Sunday morning.

The Stratford Fire Department responded to several calls shortly before 1:00 a.m. Several residents witnessed a huge fire taking place across the water at the Shakespeare American Theater located at 320 Shore Road.

Through numerous pictures and videos, several viewers reported seeing flames shooting up into the air. The flames could be seen from several hundred feet away.

Crews with the Milford Fire Department confirmed to News 8 that a total of four units were sent to aid Stratford in the fire. The Bridgeport Fire Department also sent crews.

3. I hope they can rebuild, as San Diego did when its Old Globe Theatre burned down due to arson.

It is a replica of the original Old Globe Theatre at Stratford on Avon in England.

For those that didn't read the story above, the theatre that just burned is in Stratford, Connecticut, not England.

Hope they have good insurance.....
